Book Room Donations and Distribution

Book Room Donations and Distribution

United for Literacy’s National Book Distribution program provides new, free children’s books to learners, families, and organizations across Canada. By helping children build their own home libraries, we support greater access to reading materials and encourage a lifelong love of learning.

Books are donated annually by the Scholastic Canada Possible Fund and other publishing partners, including Penguin Random House and Orca Book Publishers. We do not select specific titles, but our collection includes books for children and youth from birth to young adulthood.

Books are available to United for Literacy programs and partners as well as organizations that support children and families but without the resources to purchase books. This includes schools, non-profit daycares, camps, healthy family programs, community legal services, homework clubs, and other organizations. Books may also be distributed to locations where United for Literacy does not provide direct programming, including rural, remote, and underserved areas.

Donate New Books

United for Literacy accepts donations of brand-new books for children and youth ages 0–18. Priority titles include:

  • Board books for infants and toddlers
  • Graphic novels for all ages
  • Fiction for teens and young adults

Books can be dropped off at our Toronto office. Books can also be shipped, but recipients are responsible for covering shipping costs.

Corporate Partnership

Make a world of difference!

One in eight children in Canada does not read at grade level. You can get involved and raise funds to support literacy programs that create positive change. Make a difference today, and improve school performance with free literacy supports:

  • Send thousands of children to our Summer Literacy Camps.
  • Help send tens of thousands of brand-new, high-quality books to children.

Turn your holiday party or team-building event into a fundraiser that reflects your values. Being a corporate donor is a great investment in your community.

Why should a company or business donate to United for Literacy?

United for Literacy develops and delivers high-impact literacy and learning programs for individuals and whole communities across Canada. These programs include homework support, workplace skill-building, tutoring for children, youth, and adults, and much more. We work in cities, fly-in communities, small towns, and online, where we can reach more people and do more good. Whether you give a monetary donation or volunteer your time, you can be certain you’re making a positive investment.

For a summarized statement of operations, please see our Annual Report.

Employee engagement

Engage your team in meaningful volunteer experiences that build connections and support literacy across Canada.

Employee volunteering

Volunteer as a tutor for children or adults, online or in-person. We ask for a minimum 3-month commitment for these roles and a 4–5 hours training along with a background check. Get started today.

Host a Book Drive

Invite employees to donate new children’s books to United for Literacy. We will provide you with book ideas and packing instructions.

  • promote a lifelong love of reading
  • engage children’s imagination and curiosity; and
  • help kids develop new vocabulary and interests.

Many children in Canada have little or no access to books but having books in the home increases a child’s chances of staying in school. By donating books for children and teenagers, your staff can feel great knowing they’re making a positive impact now and for years to come.

“Do you have a chapter book I can take home? I love reading.” – Learner, Grade 3
